Weymouth
Weymouth is a seaside town in the county of Dorset and is the place where some of the first ships from England sailed to America in the early seventeenth century. Today the area retains its link to the nautical world, with its sailing waters having gained worldwide acclaim. In 2012, the area will host the Olympic Games sailing and windsurfing events.
Since the eighteenth century there have been tourists visiting Weymouth for its beautiful sandy beaches, because even then it was the sunniest part of England. Tourism increased dramatically with the coming of the railways, and peaked in the nineteen fifties and sixties. In the late twentieth century the number of holiday makers visiting Weymouth had declined but is starting to pick up again now as more people decide to holiday at home in the UK rather than abroad.
There is plenty for visitors to see in and around Weymouth besides its beautiful beaches, country areas and lakes. Weymouth has its share of museums and is half way along the Jurassic coast, which is a world heritage site. There is plenty of holiday accommodation in Weymouth, including holiday cottages and sea front hotels and boarding houses. Weymouth is also a busy port and there is plenty to see around the harbour area of the town as it is a place for cross channel ferries and private boats and yachts.
