Swanage

The town of Swanage is located on the Isle of Purbeck in Dorset and is a popular haunt for tourists looking for a whole host of different activities. In the summer months, the towns population of just 11,500, swells to almost double that figure. Originally a small fishing port, the village grew in stature in the Victorian era, becoming an upmarket resort for the wealthy.

Swanage has a varied range of tourist attractions along with leisure facilities that include a golf course, swimming pools and tennis courts. One of the most popular attractions is the award winning swanage railway, a heritage steam railway which operates throughout the Isle. With stations not only in the town itself but at Herston Holt, Harmans Cross, Corfe Castle and Norden, it’s the ideal way to explore this beautiful destination.

With beautiful beaches and stunning countryside, the town has something for everyone to enjoy. Swanage is also home to Durlston Country Park, a nature reserve on the south coast which occupies over 260 acres of parkland. Dorset’s first country park is the home of birds, animals and reptiles and has a wealth of information on the wildlife at its visitor centre. Durlston Castle was also built in the now country park back in 1886 and was built as a monument for the town by George Burt and it is now used as a restaurant for visitors.

Swanage offers such a variety of historical and modern attractions that combined with its glorious setting, the town makes a perfect holiday location.
