Sherborne

If you enjoy the romance of the past then you will love the historic market town of Sherborne in Dorset with a boys’ school of the same name that was founded in the middle of the sixteenth century. The town has a wealth of medieval and Georgian buildings. If you want to visit Sherburne then travel direct to Sherburne Railway Station and find yourself a hotel or a picturesque cottage for the duration of your stay. While you are staying in Dorset, why not visit the Tudor style house now known as Sherborne Castle. Built by Sir Walter Raleigh in 1594, “Sherbourne Lodge” as he called it, has spectacular grounds housing a 50 acre lake. The castle has been occupied by the Digby family since they purchased it from Sir Walter in 1617.

The main school in Sherborne was built in 1550 but there has been a school in the town dating right back to the time of King Alfred. See the almshouses of St. John the Baptist and St. John the Evangelist dating back to 1439 and then added to during the Victoria period. The town is extremely popular for those people who know Dorset, it holds plenty to attract tourists from across the world, but the town is not well known outside of England. Whatever you do, don’t leave Sherborne without first visiting the Abbey that dates originally to 705 AD.
