Lyme Regis

Lyme Regis is a beautiful seaside resort on the South West coast of Dorset. A historic town, it is surrounded by a spectacular coastline and countryside, on the renown Cobb Harbour. The location has been awarded the status of being England’s first World Heritage Site. The area offers a range of diverse activities from fossil hunting to sun bathing on one the many glorious beaches.

With a wealth of history, Lyme Regis has an excellent museum called The Philpot, which covers the towns many brushes with history, from civil war through to the famous “Cobb”, a harbour wall shrouded in history and immortalised in Jane Austen’s novel ‘Persuasions’.  The museum is built on the birth place of the famous 19th century, fossil collector, Mary Annings. The palaeontologist is celebrated throughout this area, with several tourist spots being linked to her, non more-so than her final resting place, the parish church of St Michael. The church, which is situated within the old town, attracts tourists not only for its link with Mary Annings, but also because of its beautiful architecture.

Lyme Regis has a number of annual events such as the ‘Lyme Regis Regatta and Carnival’ and the Fossil Festival which the town hosts in conjunction with the Natural history Museum. These occasions attract a number of visitors from near and far, and generally funds raised from the activities are shared amongst local charities.
